Twist Top Snowflake Box

snowflake box

I love love love these little twist top boxes.

You can start with a circular piece of paper for a glue-free box, like the one Victoria's Secret had. The downside is that even a modest size box requires a very large piece of paper.

This glue-together box can be cut from a letter size or A4 piece of paper. Much better for those of us who like to use a cutting machine.

Files download for free; contribute what you wish.  Suggested amount for this design: $1.99.

Cut out box pieces.

Pre-crease all folds.

Coil box into a tube and glue at the side.

Close box: collapse top sections, pushing each to the side and working around the box to interlock snowflake arms.

Turn box over and glue the hexagonal base to the bottom flaps.

This is great. I love snowflakes. I do pysanka and one year for Easter I made this type of box to give the eggs in.

In "The Book of Boxes" by Kunio Ekiguchi this is called a chrysanthemum box.

That is so pretty! It's a shame we're just past Christmas (although we did have hail last night) but maybe next year.

I have a stupid question as I am a relative newbie to the cutting machines. Can I cut any of these files with my Cricut, I have SCAL. Thanks

cpeep said...

Sonya, not a stupid question at all. You need Inkscape (which is a free program). Open the PDF version, then save it as an SVG. Open the SVG in SCAL.

Email me directly, I have an SVG version of this box. (No score lines--you'll have to look at the picture and add them).

Thank you for this lovely tutorial! I just made a "prototype" just to see how it would work and it was so easy and wonderful! I appreciate the things you do for us people who are not nearly as talented!

This snowflake box is such a brilliant design, Carol. (You were miles ahead of the cutting trend.) Thanks so much for all you've shared!

all of ya'll are so talented! paper cutting machine? i cut this out by hand. whew! it took me several hours to cut this out. the snowflakes were more labor intensive than the holly leaves. guess if i'm going to keep doing this i need to invest in a paper cutting machine. and excuse me for being dumb but is that what a cricut does is cut out intricate designs like this one?

sandra said...

wow ya'll are so talented! i'm new to all this paper cutting stuff. i just love all the different templates i have found for boxes, but i think until i get a paper cutting machine and i'm assuming that's what a cricut does i'll just stick to the simpler patterns. this snowflake box has taken me all day just to cut out! now i have to fold it into shape. whew! i'm beat.

Not a Cricut. Those are intended to cut only the pre-made shapes from the company's cartridges. I use a Craft Robo, which is the old version of a Silhouette. (My new Silhouette Cameo is under the tree right now).

I love this cute box! I am, however, having trouble with the file. Shouldn't I be able to use the SVG file for my Silhouette Cameo? Somehow I can't figure it out. Can anyone help me?

Carol said...

The Cameo will open both DXF and GSD files. The free version of Silhouette Studio doesn't open SVG files.
