Sliceform Christmas Tree with Angled Slices

Why is this sliceform papercraft tree special?  The slices fan out from the center axis at increasing angles rather than being perpendicular to the center slice.

Sliceform pop up card Christmas tree

Compare to this conventional Christmas tree sliceform pop up card with perpendicular slices.

Assembly is like any sliceform.  Because this cut file is designed to be a pop up card, I have configured the slots to lock the pieces so they won't fall apart even if you turn the card upside down and shake it!

Make it!

3D Twisted Origami Tree

Here's a nifty papercraft, an origami Christmas tree made from a map.

3d Christmas origami tree

The base is square and the folds spiral around, tucking in at the top.

3d tree origami

I looked through a discarded atlas to find a map with a lot of green.  You can boost the color by sponging some green ink on the map if you need to.  You will see a tiny bit of the back side of the paper at the very tip of the tree (the beige part on my tree).

The finished size of the tree depends  of course, on the size square you start with.  I used a 9" square of atlas page and ended up with a 3" tall tree.

The origami tree fold was designed by Jannie van Schuylenburg.
Link to folding directions by Leyla Torres.

I've made a bunch of other projects from one discarded atlas--the Dutch apple sliceform, and this rolled rose wreath.  (THAT took forever to assemble, but I love it.)

Paper Box Gingerbread Advent Calendar Part 3

Several weeks of work and a LOT of paper later, I have completed my gingerbread advent calendar from paper boxes.

The front has a tall door with dimensional snow paint outlining it.  The wreath is made from punched branches.  I covered the gable end with a triangle of brown paper and scalloped trim.  Windows are cut from yellow waxy paper.   The candy sticks are made from striped paper rolled diagonally into a tube.  Drawer pulls are small brads fastened through each drawer front.

The roof is decorated with snow writer paint and melted pony beads.

I cut the tree from a piece of scrapbook paper and then cut it apart to fit the drawers.  It is decorated with Stickles glitter and jewels.

House of Boxes Advent Calendar Part 2

If you've been following along the last couple weeks, you know I've been working on a gingerbread house advent calendar constructed of boxes.

I have finished making 25 boxes and have put them together to build a gingerbread house.  Now it's all about the decorations.

Gingerbread House Advent Calendar Part 1

Yes, you guessed it, the mystery paper craft project is going to be an advent calendar.  The design consists of 24 or 25 matchbox type boxes, stacked into a 3D house.

Depending on how you stack the boxes, you can make a chalet type gingerbread house (a cube), or a farm house (a rectangular prism).

My 25 box gingerbread advent calendar house is still in progress. If you want to work along with me, start making your boxes!

Mystery Project Work in Progress

About a month ago I put out a call for ideas and got some great suggestions (see the comments on this post).

I'm hard at work on this paper craft--can you guess what it might be?

If you think you know AND want to play along AND you live near an A.C. Moore you might want to run over and get 25 pieces of 12" x 12" card stock in the color of your choice while it's still on sale (that would be TODAY).

Once I finish making my 25 boxes I'll post an update with the templates so you can get started.

Christmas Tree Tea Light Lantern

Here is a quick and easy tea light paper craft lantern with vellum insert.

The cube is approximately 2.5" on each side.

The trees are adapted from a Bird's Cards file (used with permission).

Glue the lantern and the vellum closed with their long narrow end tabs.

Five Pointed Origami Star Cutting File

I have created a new cutting file set for the five pointed origami paper star made from a pentagon. This is an older project that previously had only a PDF printable pattern.

You can cut it from plain paper, double sided paper, sheet music, book pages, wrapping paper....

Here are some origami stars I made.  The blue and red are double sided origami paper.  The next one is cut from a Where's Waldo book, and the last one is sheet music.

File can be scaled to fit any paper size.  Adhere your paper to your cutting mat with the right side up!  Note that the file is mostly score lines so it does take a while to cut.

Follow the directions from this origami star post.  It's much easier to fold with the crease lines started for you!

Sliceform Christmas Tree from Paper Strips

How to make paper sliceforms

inside of sliceform 3d Christmas tree card

This is a sliceform Christmas tree pop up card design I've been muddling around with since last year, when I constructed a more elaborate version, shown below, which you can read about here

large white sliceform tree

I think I like the smaller Christmas tree better!

While drafting this smaller sliceform I realized I needed to alternate some of the slots to make the tree strips stay in place securely.  I found that the large one, as made, tends to fall apart!  The last thing you want is to send a card that arrives semi-assembled.

Cut the file.  Separate the strips into pairs by size.

Slot together the longest pair at the top slot.
Crease the feet on the score lines at the bottom of the strips.

how to assemble the first set of strips

Add the next pair of strips, with 5 slots.  First slide together the end slot of the new strip to the second slot of the footed strip.  Then do the same for the matching strip on the other side.  Last,  cross them and slide their second slots together.  Lift one up, and one down, as you gently criss-cross them, to get those last slots to go together.

Continue adding pairs of strips, in decreasing length, until you have used all of them. Here the 4 slot strips have been added, first on each side, then working across to criss-cross what was already in place.

The 3 slot pieces have been added.

Make the 3D tree into a pop up card

Create a base card from two 8.5" x 3" rectangles, hinged together with a small strip of paper (my hinge is 1" wide by 2" tall).

Here is just the front.

snowflake embossed card front

Flatten the tree and lay it on the right-hand side of the open card.  The feet are to the left, toward the hinge.  The exact placement is not critical as long as the top of the tree (at the far right) is not hanging outside the card.

Mine is approximately where the horizontal centerline would be, but again, it does not have to be precise.

glue the first foot

Spread adhesive on the foot you can see.

glue on sliceform Christmas tree

Close the card, flip it over, and spread glue on the other foot.

Close the card.  Weight the card or pinch it with your fingers (you can feel where the tree ends and the feet begin) until dry.

close the card

Church and Trees Pop Up Card

I haven't cut this pop up Christmas card design, which features a church and evergreens (yet), so no pictures of the finished card! Here's a picture of the cut file, however.

Poinsettia Hawaiian Quilt Block Card

I revisited the idea of using Hawaiian quilt blocks as cards with this poinsettia design.

My inspiration came from this article on echo quilting. It does not list the name of the quilt block or the designer.

Download the Hawaiian quilt block poinsettia cut file set: DXF, PDF, Silhouette Studio, SVG.
Assembly is simple, just cut the two layers and stack them. Add dots of glitter paint for berries in the center.
