Busy Card Making in May

May is crunch time at my house for card making--a couple birthdays, graduations, Mother's Day, Thank You cards for work.

Mother's Day, in particular, always sneaks up on me!

Today's post is a show-and-tell.  More information about these cards to follow.

Starting with not-my-favorite.  I made this card in 2 hours because it HAD to get into the mail on Wednesday afternoon.  I like the papers and the birds, but I don't love the fabric flowers.  I can't quite put my finger on why.  The colors are right, but something is off about them.  Probably should have used felt flowers.

This is a double Z fold pop up card for Mother's Day.  Finished size is 6" x 5.5".
Splitcoast stampers has a good tutorial, and check out Pinterest for more ideas.

The birds are from Jolee's Boutique, they're called "stitched colorful birds."

Now this card IS my favorite.  My daughter and I purchased the vector flowers from GraphikCliparts to create her grad cap.   Since it's a vector design it scales to any size, thus, this graduation cap spring fold card.

I cut the footprints with my Silhouette Cameo.  They are MINUSCULE!

That's all for now!

It's Graduation Time Again!

How to make mortar board and graduation pop up cards, and money or gift card holders

Graduation Cap Money Holder

A fun way to give money. Rolled up paper money just fits diagonally in the box.

Mortar Board Graduation Pop Up Card

One of my most popular projects. The pop up part is quick and relatively easy to make.

This isn't my design, but it's a good one. You can fit two of these on one sheet of 12" square card stock. Another quick project.

I originally made this for a bat mitzvah but it works for graduation too.

Graduation Cap Money Holder Box

graduation cap money holder
How to make a quick and easy graduation money holder
United States paper money, rolled up, fits diagonally in the box. If the height of your currency is larger than 2.75" (about 7cm) you will need a larger box.

You will need three square pieces of card stock for the cap. Mine were 6.5" (about 15.4cm), 6" (about 16.7cm) and 3.5" (about 9 cm).
Make a box with a lid from the larger two pieces of card stock.
Written directions are all over the Internet, so I won't re-invent the wheel. Here are just a couple..and a video. I do like to dab a little glue under all the flaps on the inside of the box and lid to hold them in place.

Origami Instructions

Glue the smaller piece of card stock to the top of the box. Each corner of the box should point to the center of one side of the small piece of card stock.

Make a tassel.
Place a glue dot in the center top of the cap. Attach tassel.
Cut a circle of card stock large enough to cover glue dot and attach on top of tassel.
Optional scroll
Cut a piece of lightweight paper slightly larger than your currency. Mine was 2.75" x 6.5". Print or write your sentiment on the paper. Roll up paper and currency together and tie with a small ribbon. If you have a tiny rubber band (I used one from tooth braces) you can use that--with or without a ribbon.

Print banner if desired. Cut out board and cap on black lines. Score on red lines.

Crease board in half at center line. Crease tabs as shown.

Assemble cap. Fold cap in half at front. Glue together at back, overlapping tab.

Cut base card. I used half of an 8.5" x 11" sheet of card stock.

Fold board in half at center line. Lay on base card. Be sure the top of the triangle does not extend past the top of the card.

Slide the triangle to meet the center fold of the base card. Mark the point of intersection.

Draw a line perpendicular to the center fold of the base card at the marked point.

Spread glue on the tab that will go on the right-hand side of the card. Fold the tab under and line up the edge of the board piece with the line you drew. Be sure the point of the board is right on the center fold of the card base.

Flip the board piece up.

Spread glue on the back half of the cap, both sides.

Lay cap on top of board tab. Align the top of the cap with the fold line of the board. Align the back of the cap with the center fold line of the card.

Refold board along its center. Spread glue on the tab that will attach to the left-hand side of the card.

Graduation Cap Pop Up Card

This pop up card took me quite a bit longer than I thought it would. Lots of drying time and an evening of messing with the cap to get it just right.

Once I gather up all the pattern pieces I'll post a tutorial. Later this week, okay?

Quick Graduation Pop Up Gift Card

graduation pop up card

graduation pop up card

Fast and easy pop up gift card holder for graduation. When the card is opened the gift card slides out of the pocket.

The template and instructions are on splitcoast stampers. (If this link doesn't work go to splitcoaststampers.com and click down through: Splitcoaststampers>Stamping Stuff>Downloads>Templates>Graduation Gift Card Holder).

I tweaked the base of the cap a little to make it symmetrical, and made the notepaper and sentiment on the computer instead of drawing/stamping them. I also covered the brad that holds the tassel in place with a card stock circle "button".

I found that you can cut two cards from a piece of 12" x 12" piece of card stock if you flip the template over. Bear in mind that if your card stock is patterned on only one side, one card will be "backwards". All that means is one will open from the right, and one from the left. No big deal.

Here's another cute graduation cap card, from diy network.
