Spider and Web Accordion Garland

This crisscross spiders and spider web papercraft garland is a mash up of paper chains and cascade cards.  Great for Halloween!  Hang them vertically in your doorways or swag them on your chandelier.

The intricate cutting is best done by machine. Easy to assemble once cut!

Van Pop Up Card Tutorial

Halloween is coming, so I was inspired to transform a papercraft Mystery Machine van into a pop up card.

I used a paper model by mikedaws and this other one by Gary Williams and Craig Griswold for reference.

From a technical point of view, this pop up card is a 180° Open Top Box  (for the van sides, front, and rear)

combined with a Tabletop Floating on Boxes  (for the van roof).

Mystery Machine Pop Up Card

Being of a certain age I fondly recall Saturday morning cartoons, which apparently are no more.  In honor of Scooby Doo, I am working on a Mystery Machine pop up card.

Strangely enough, the hardest part has been to come up with a sentiment.  I really want to use this as a Halloween card, but the best wording I have so far is "Jinkies!  You're HOW old??"  So maybe it will be a birthday card in the end.  Please feel free to add your suggestions in the comments.

This is the prototype for the inside.  I need to remake it, adjusting the size and the order of construction.

Tutorial is up!

Candy Corn Corner Bookmark

Candy corn--love it or hate it? I don't care to eat it, but the colors are cheerful and seasonal.

This is a quick and easy paper craft bookmark suitable for hand cutting or machine cutting.

How to make a candy corn corner bookmark

Click to download file set: Silhouette Studio, PDF, DXF, SVG (how to use my SVG files in Cricut Design Space). Files download for free.

I appreciate that most readers support my site with a small contribution.

Cut pieces from white, orange and yellow paper.

Crease diagonal creases of corner base.

Fold in one side of the corner base and apply glue to the top.

Fold in the other side and adhere.  This is the back of the bookmark.

You can make this even faster by using a plain white envelope (recycled junk mail!) for the corner base.   Measure from the corner 2.75" on two sides, connect the two points and cut!

Flip the corner over to the front.

Adhere the white top and the yellow bottom to the corner, abutting the bottom of the white to the top of the yellow piece.

Adhere the orange middle, matching side edges to the edges of the base corner.

Add eyes and mouth if you like.

Bonus Haunted House Cards

I have added a set of traditional flat greeting cards to the Halloween haunted house accordion card files.  Re-download the file set to get the bonus files!

5 card set of Halloween cards

I made the templates very tiny to fit them on one page.  Be sure to enlarge before cutting.

Haunted Houses Accordion Card

This paper accordion of Halloween haunted houses can be a greeting card, or a shelf village.  Mine perches quite well on the top edge of a big mirror.

The houses are approximately 5" tall and 3.5" wide.

Download files set: PDF, SVG (how to use my files in Cricut Design Studio), DXF, Silhouette Studio.

Files download for free; contribute what you wish. Suggested amount for this file is $2.99.

Cut the files.  The "Happy Halloween" greeting is a separate layer that may be removed or changed.
Score on score lines between the houses.

Adhere the piece with two houses to the right edge of the piece with three houses, using the side tabs.

Fold as you prefer, with both sides folding back from the center house (as shown), or zigzag.

Pumpkins and Cat Tea Light Lantern

I pulled up some other Halloween silhouette greeting cards and have started making them into battery tea light votive paper lanterns.  (See the ghost votive in the last post.)

This one I had designed as a flat front or window pop up card. The pumpkins and cat are dingbats from the font ILL oCtoBer.

Ghost Silhouette Window Card

silhouette of ghost in card

I've made quite a few of these little window pop up cards. Some Halloween, some Christmas, some others here and here.

This greeting card has some ghosts. I borrowed the 3-ghost layout idea from a pennant on Bird's Cards. The ghost is the letter O dingbat from the Trick or Treat font. I modified the ghost a bit!

Cut and score.  On the PDF and JPG, cut lines are black, score lines are red.

Starting at the top, with the "good" side of the card facing you: valley fold the top score line; mountain fold the next score line; valley fold the two small score lines on the sides, near the bottom of the window; valley fold the score line at the bottom of the window.

Collapse the card and glue it into a base card.  Glue the center parts of the letters A, P, and O into the letters.

Quick Halloween Silhouette Cards

All of the shapes used on these silhouette cards are from the dingbat font ILL OCtoBer.

After arranging the Halloween motifs to my satisfaction, I added a frame and welded everything together with CorelDraw.

The effect is like scherenschnitte paper cutting, but far easier to design.

How to assemble flat front card

For all files black lines are cut lines, red lines are score lines. Cut the file, fold on the score line, and back the silhouette with contrasting paper. I used origami paper.

How to assemble window style pop up card

See this post for more information about folding window pop up cards.

For all files black lines are cut lines, red lines are score lines.

Cut the file. With the right side of the card facing you, crease the score lines.

The top horizontal line is a valley fold. The next score line down is a mountain fold. The two small creases forming the center fold line of the card are valley folds. The bottom horizontal line is a valley fold.

Back the window with contrasting paper if you wish.

Remember to fold the backing paper into an L shape to cover the opening on the bottom of the card as well as the opening on the upright portion of the card!

Glue the window pop up into a base card of coordinating or contrasting color. See an example here.

Actually a sympathy card for someone with a concussion, but it could work as a mummy.

Pleated Apple or Pumpkin Box Tutorial

apple box from cardstock
Last week I made this in red as an apple box. In orange, it makes a pumpkin box. You may remember the similar six sided acorn box, from last year.

Apples

Back to School! I made three apple projects this week.

My pleated apple box with a lid is a cousin of the acorn box.

The apple box has 8 sides rather than 6.
